Fitting
Limestone and marble surrounds come in multiple pieces. For example;
- The 'Shelf' - commonly known as a mantel or mantelpiece, this is the top part of the fireplace that sits on the Header
- The 'Frieze' or 'Header' - the horizontal part of the fireplace that sits between the legs
- The 'Jambs' or 'Legs' - the vertical parts of the fireplace that stand on each side of the fire opening to support the Header and Shelf
In the back of the Jambs there will be a copper wire. This enables the fitter to put a screw into the wall, set the legs and secure the copper wire around it. The Frieze is set on top and again will have a copper wire to enable them to do the same. The Shelf then sits on top of the Frieze. You can use silicone to secure the shelf and sometimes fitters use a product such as no nails along the back edge of each piece to adhere to the wall as an extra measure. The joints are tight but you can put grout in the joints if preferred once installed.
We always recommend finding an experienced builder or fireplace installer to fit your surround.
Dimensions Explained
Important Fireplace Surround Dimensions:
- Shelf Width
- Shelf Depth
- Overall Height
- Opening Height
- Opening Width
- Plinth Width
- Rebate Depth
Rebate Depth
Most dimensions are fairly obvious but the Rebate Depth is one that is often misunderstood. If the fireplace surround is sitting directly against a wall and there is nothing behind it, there is no need for a rebate. Often there will be something behind the inside leg of the surround. This might be a back-panel or slip - a piece of stone or marble, or it might be a fireplace insert - a cast iron fireplace where wood or coal is burned. If the inside leg of the surround is sitting against anything the depth of the inside leg will need to be reduced to allow for this. This gap is known as the Rebate Depth.
